DESIGN MOVEMENT CUBE
DESIGN CASE STUDY
OVERVIEW
BRIEF
This project caused me to explore the profound impact of the Arts and Crafts Movement on the design principles and aesthetics of cube boxes. The Arts and Crafts Movement, originating in the late 19th century, championed a return to craftsmanship, simplicity, and the integration of art into everyday life. Investigate how prominent figures such as William Morris and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who were central to this movement, shaped the design philosophy of functional objects like cube boxes.
I analyzed the use of materials, ornamentation, and handcrafted techniques in creating this cube box. I also had to investigate the socio-cultural context that influenced cube box design within the Arts and Crafts Movement, considering the movement’s ideals of social reform and rejection of mass production.
ARTS & CRAFTS OVERVIEW
COLOR SCHEME
The color palette of Arts and Crafts design, earthy tones prevailed, with muted greens, browns, and soft yellows drawing inspiration from the natural world. Deep reds and indigo blues were also integrated, adding a touch of richness and depth to the overall scheme.sive Officer
TYPOGRAPHY
Arts and Crafts typography favored clean lines, legibility, and a return to medieval and Gothic influences. The movement often utilized hand-lettering and calligraphy to emphasize the artisanal nature of the crafted pieces, reinforcing the belief that every element of a design should be a thoughtful expression of the artisan’s skill.
IMAGERY
“Strawberry Theif,” (above) was designed by William Morris in 1882. Whilst the foliate designs are complex and eye-catching, and the design provides little depth between foreground and background, the birds remain a focal point due to their light color and the naturalism of their rendering.
