PRIDE & PREJUDICE BOOK COVERS & TYPESETTING

PRINT COVERS & PHYSICAL BOOKS

OVERVIEW

Assigned with the task of typesetting a book, I chose Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen. Due to the length of the book, I split the book into two. The first book contains pages 1-170 and the second contains pages 171-345. Thus, I created two different book covers.

Typesetting this book involved deciding on the typography, size of type, type scale, designing chapter headings, hyphenation, justification, checking for widows/orphans, and use of special characters.

COVERS

The volume 1. cover features the main character of the novel, Elizabeth Bennet, done in watercolor. The back also features watercolor, as well as reviews of the book and other books by the author. Being that the love interests of the books are at odds at the beginning, the faces shown in the collar of her dress face away.

The volume 2 cover features the other main character of the novel, Mr. Darcy, done in watercolor. The back also features watercolor, as well as reviews of the book and other books by the author. Being that the love interests fall in love during the second half, the faces shown in his necktie are facing each other.

BOOK TYPESETTING

Typesetting both books was a meticulous process that involved transforming a raw manuscript into a visually appealing document. Here are the steps I took:

  1. Decided on page size, layout, and margins, and established a consistent type scale for chapter titles, preface pages, and every other page.
  2. Chose a font for body text, headings, and subheadings, to ensure readability and cohesiveness.
  3. Implemented paragraph, line formatting, spacing, indentation, and alignment.
  4. Designed chapter headings and subheadings, incorporating page breaks and ornaments at each chapter start.
  5. Addressed widows and orphans, optimizing spacing to eliminate awkward breaks in the text.
  6. Conducted a final proofread to catch any remaining errors.
