OVERVIEW
BRIEF
For my typographic poster for my Advanced Typography course at Purdue, I selected Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami. This novel explores themes of emotional emptiness, longing, and personal transformation through the story of Tsukuru, a man haunted by rejection and isolation. The text’s meditative tone and recurring motifs of travel—especially trains—offer rich visual and conceptual ground for typographic interpretation. Typography, in this context, can become a vessel for expressing movement, distance, and the quiet rhythm of introspection that defines Tsukuru’s inner world.
The first poster evokes Tsukuru’s emotional emptiness through restrained color and open space. The second captures movement with layered lines and intersecting typography inspired by train routes. The final poster reflects arrival and growth as color returns in deep purples and reds, symbolizing warmth, reconnection, and self-discovery.
